Learning to Write Books While Writing Cheaply for Others

I learned to write books writing them for other people on Fiverr.

What I learned: Writing well takes reps.

I thought I was good. I was bad.

And, I got paid badly for my bad writing.

But at least I got paid!

Just enough to keep me interested.

I would highly recommend this approach.

What approach?

Write cheap and for other people.

Nowadays, I insist on having credit for ghostwriting. But back then, nobody but the author knew I existed. This meant that if my writing wasn’t great, no one would know.

Can you do this?

Try it.

Get on Fiverr, Upwork, or Freelancer, and if you can, pick a niche.

Write for next to free.

If you’re halfway good, meaning, you have some raw talent, you’ll get jobs.

Write like a maniac.

Don’t turn anyone down. Put your back against a wall and write.

I had a full time job and only wrote in the mornings before work, but I did it every day. I did it until I got carpal tunnel.

I’m sure there is no way I would have gotten good enough to get the kind of work I get today if I hadn’t put in that early wordcount.

I love this approach.

Yes. Technically you could just write a lot every day for yourself, but you have two big disadvantages against you:

  1. No deadlines. No one waiting on the other side of what you’re writing.

  1. You’d have to think of something to write about. That’s hard! Ghostwriting completely solves that problem.

What about you? How did you get your reps in?

Let me know in the comments.
