Being Humble About Your Potential Keeps You From Reaching It

Being Humble About Your Potential Keeps You From Reaching It

How to be a great writer

It's Humble to Think Our Potential Is Limited

Maybe in some things. I'm not going to get taller. In fact, I'm shrinking as my spine compresses through the decades!

But when it comes to mental activities and skills of the mind—like writing—you and I have unlimited potential.

By that, I mean only God knows the limits of our potential. And I can promise you, as someone who's had a front-row seat to author transformations for the last few years, you are vastly underestimating yours.

You can only see your past and present when it comes to your knowledge and ability. But you need to think bigger here. What would it look like for you to be great?

What if you could master all the components of written communication?

What if you expanded your vocabulary?

What if you practiced crafting surprising and delightful phrases like your favorite authors? (Mine for that is Annie Dillard.)

What if you understood the mechanics of great copywriting—which are, in fact, learnable skills?

What if you discovered better and better ways to tap into your highest creativity?

And this is just scratching the surface.

The fact is, almost anything related to knowledge is possible, given enough time and practice. Want to grow in some intellectual endeavor?

Understand three things:

  1. It is possible.

  1. You are vastly underestimating your ability to grow.

  1. It will be difficult, because your mind craves stasis.

If you accept these three truths, you can become a far greater writer than you can imagine right now.

And if you especially accept #3, you won't be surprised when growth involves pain.

It may feel like tedium, boredom, or frustration.

When that happens—GOOD! It means you've hit your edge, and it's only a matter of time until you push through to your next skill level.

It's not magic. It's how God wired you. But it may feel like magic when the breakthrough happens. Transformation always feels magical when you notice it.

And you will notice it.
